PUBLIC APPEARANCES

First Trip to the USA - April 8
Accompanied by her sister Maria, Sophia leaves Rome for Los Angeles on a SAS plane. Upon her arrival, dressed in a blue knit dress and brown sable coat, she is greeted by a four-year old lad of Italian ancestry named John Minervini, and then meets the press to answer a few questions. When asked about the ring she wears, she says, it's just a ring. "I think about marriage all the time, but I haven't had time to meet the man." Carlo also makes the trip but travels separately with Sophia's aides Basilio Franchina and secretary Ines Bruscia for the sake of appearances. Carlo is introduced and known as Sophia's impresario.

Welcome Party at Romanoff's - April 9
20th Century Fox throws a gala bash at swanky Romanoff's restaurant in Beverly Hills to honor Sophia's arrival in Hollywood. Top blonde at 20th Century-Fox Jayne Mansfield sashays to Sophia's table to say hello and as she leans over her right breast pops out of its minimal safety net. Mansfield is later quoted, commenting on Sophia, "She said that she'd never wear a dress like mine. I'm not sure how I should take that remark." Sophia has always refused to autograph pictures taken with Mansfield. "Fans send me this picture a lot", she later says, "but I never autograph it. I don't like it. This was a very upsetting moment."

The Pride and the Passion Party - April 17
Sophia, members of The Pride and the Passion cast and other Hollywood celebrities are invited at a cocktail party given by
director and producer Stanley Kramer in Hollywood in honor of Sophia's arrival in America.

The Pride and the Passion Premiere - June 26
Sophia, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra all attend the Hollywood premiere of The Pride and the Passion. Sophia is served the same evening with a subpoena upon her arrival notifying her she is being sued by Hecht-Lancaster for breach of contract. Unfamiliar with American legal procedure, she takes the paper with a smile and hands it to her secretary Jean Barnes. A party follows the screening of the movie.

Welcome-Back Party - July 26
Party in honor of Sophia at Casina Valadier in Rome upon her return from America.

Houseboat in Washington - August 11
Sophia travels from Los Angeles to Washington, via Chicago, on the Super Chief, the Train of the Stars, and attends a Sunday afternoon press conference at the Motion Picture Association Building upon her arrival. Wearing an eye-popping white strapless gown and black Italian shoes, Sophia opens the press conference by saying, "Let's not talk about sex."

I Want to Meet the President - August 14
Sophia wants to meet US president Eisenhower but can only go as far as Vice-president Richard Nixon's office on a visit with Italian diplomat Egidio Ortona on Capitol Hill. Gina Lollobrigida met with Eisenhower in 1954.

Italian Embassy Party - August 20
Party in Sophia's honor at the Italian Embassy in Washington with quick appearance of Senator Jack Kennedy who does not want to have his picture taken publicly with the actress. The main purpose of the reception is to enable Sophia to meet diplomats, other congressmen and Americans of Italian descent.

En Route to London - October 18
Sophia and Carlo leave Los Angeles en route to Paris, declining to pose together for pictures before boarding the plane. Carlo takes another plane to Rome where he consults lawyers about the possibility of annulling their proxy marriage while Sophia flies the opposite way en route to London. On the 20th, Sophia meets her male partners for The Key, Trevor Howard and William Holden, at the Savoy Hotel Press Conference.

Italian Embassy Party - October 20
Sophia is guest of honor at a party at the Italian Embassy in London given by Ambassador Vittorio Zoppi a few weeks after Sophia and Carlo were proclaimed public sinners in Italy. Confident Sophia would keep silence on the matter Zoppi is in for a surprise when she draws him to one side and asks "Can anything be done to get my husband's first marriage annulled?" He raises her hands to his lips and says "I can make no promises but I will do what I can." (Zec)

EDITOR'S NOTES

Sophia's Father Charged of Concubinage - January 10
Riccardo Scicolone is slated to be tried on a charge of concubinage and maltreatment in relation with her wife Nella Rivolta. Newspapers report he separated informally from Nella and went back to Romilda, the mother of his two natural daughters, Sophia and Maria. He is said to live on pocket money Sophia gives him.

The Hand of Fate
- January

During location shooting of Legend of the Lost in the desert of Libya, Sophia comes close to death when defective heating system at the motel where she lodges releases toxic fumes.

Breach of Contract - June 26
Hecht-Lancaster Productions sue Sophia for $500,000 damages for breach of contract for the films Bandoola and Blaze in the Sun. Gai-lo Carlo Ponti's answer to the action is that Hecht-Lancaster
didn't come up with a picture as stipulated in the contract.

Haven in Bürgenstock - July
Once Desire under the Elms is completed, Hollywood reporters are challenging Sophia about her relation with Carlo, so, to avoid the heat, the couple decide to settle in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, a chic haven for movie stars after spending a few days in Cortina d'Ampezzo. It is at this time that Ponti arranges the paperwork for proxy marriage while seeking Swiss citizenship.

Proxy marriage - September 17
Afraid of losing her protégé, Ponti arranges for a quick divorce and proxy marriage in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico while Sophia is shooting Houseboat opposite Cary Grant. The news is made public the next day, without Sophia knowing it, in a column by gossip maven Louella Parsons. Just by coincidence, the final wedding scene in Houseboat is filmed that very same day. Carlo flies from Rome to Los Angeles on September 18 and Sophia is anxious to know what this is all about.

Public Sinners - October 12
A few weeks after the proxy marriage, following an article published on October 2 by Vatican's L'Osservatore della Domenica calling Sophia and Carlo "public sinners", the Roman Catholic Morality League in its publication Noi Homini calls a boycott on all Loren film, "And we ask all true Catholics to consider them, their work and their eventual films banned from any consideration."

Denunciation by Luisa Brambilla - October
A Milan housewife named Luisa Brambilla denounces the newlyweds and files criminal charges against the Pontis on the ground of bigamy and public adultery. A letter-to-the-editor of Oggi even proposes that Sophia should be burned in public. Sophia and Carlo's exile from Italy begins and will last until they legally marry in April 1966.

Bürgenstock - December
Once the filming of The Key is completed in London, Sophia and Carlo, regarded as fugitives by many, return to Bürgenstock where they spend Christmas. Sophia's sister, Maria, and their mother, Romilda, join them bringing presents and moral support. Sophia's Christmas present from Carlo is a pastel mink coat. The couple also spend time with their neighbor, writer Noel Coward, who was once quoted as saying about Sophia: "She should have been sculpted in chocolate truffles, so that the world could have devoured her." The resort will become their haven during tumultuous times to come.
