International Variety Club Charity Dinner
- April 29

Sophia and Carlo attend a $3000-a-plate charity dinner sponsored by the International Variety Club at the grill of Hôtel de Paris in Monaco. Among other guests are Prince Charles, Prince Rainer with wife Grace Kelly and daughter Carolina, as well as Cary Grant and David Niven. Former Secretary of Slate Henry A. Kissinger receives the annual humanitarian
prize.


Cannes Film Festival
- May 19

Sophia attends the famous film festival
where Una giornata particolare is presented.  Prior to her arrival, on May 19, the plane from Paris to Nice hit a rock wall and Sophia thinks she is going to die. Festival dates: May 13 through May 27.

The Scola-Loren Affair - May 20
Sophia and director Ettore Scola spend the night dancing and enjoying themselves while their spouses are left behind at Cannes' Beau Brummel nightclub until, very upset, they decide to leave. A famous "dispute" which becomes an item of gossip in newspapers all over the world will follow suggesting an affair between Scola and Sophia, whose marriage is already qualified as shaky since she settled alone with her two children in Paris. Ponti is reportedly wining and dining with American author Toni Ambling following that evening in Cannes.


Happy Birthday Johnny! - June 17
Sophia attends with Jean Barthet an exclusive party at the Hôtel Élysées-Matignon celebrating French singer Johnny Halliday's birthday and the launching of a new electronic lighter by the Charles Jourdan.

Arrival in New York - September 17
Sophia flies from Rome to New York City where she is greeted at Kennedy by her stepson Alex Ponti. Sophia is in America to promote her new movie Una giornata particolare.

Sidney Lumet's Party- September 18
Sophia attends Gail and Sidney Lumet's party honoring Diana Ross who is doing The Wiz in New York City. Sophia is there as a special guest along with Candice Bergen, Lauren Bacall and Anthony Perkins.

Christian Dior Fourrure- September 28
Presentation of the new fur collection by Frédéric Castet followed by a reception to inaugurate the new Paris boutique. Wearing a funky hairdo Sophia is accompanied by Mexican actress Maria Felix to cut the traditional ribbon made of white fox furs.

Belgian Premiere of Una giornata particolare- September 19
Sophia is special guest at the Belgian prmiere of Ettore Scola's new film.

Variety Club Charity Dinner - October 26
Sophia is among the guests at a charity dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel with Prince Charles as guest of honor. The party is sponsored by the Variety Club of Beverly Hills, a group of movie stars who raise funds for charities, with Cary Grant as honorary chairman of the dinner.


NATO's Convention - October 28
Sophia is in Miami Beach for the National Association of Theater Owners Convention where she receives from Marvin Goldman, president of
National Association of Theater Owners, the Female Star of the Year award.

Una Giornata Promo in Hollywood - November
Sophia and Carlo are in Hollywood to promote the film Una giornata particolare.

Private Screening of Una Giornata - December
French film distributor François Chalais organizes a private screening of Una Giornata particolare - which premieres in Paris on December 7 - at Club 13 where a few guests attend, including Sophia, Carlo, Mastroianni, Lino Ventura and George Lautner.

FAVA Benefit Gala - December
Sophia attends with actor Jean-Claude Brialy a benefit gala held by the French American Volunteer Association at the Grand Hotel in Paris.

While in New York to promote Una giornata particolare in September, Sophia and Marcello Mastroianni appear on PBS Dick Cavett Show. Memorable for lines Marcello said: "To be a Latin lover, you must be first of all a great fucker".

EDITOR'S NOTES

Grandmother - January
Sophia becomes grandmother when Carlo Ponti's daughter, Gwendolina, gives birth to her daughter Angelica whom she had with Vittorio Coronia, an Italian actor and director.

Villa Busted
- February 8

 The villa in Marino is busted by the police who show a search warrant.  Two busloads of police armed with machine guns surround the estate.  At the same time another squad of police search Ponti's office in Rome. Ponti is suspected of income tax evasion, making improper use of government subsidies, and of illegal export of Italian funds estate. Sophia leaves for Paris the next day.

Sophia Detained - March 8
Sophia flies to Rome from Paris for the editing of Una giornata particolare's trailer. On her way back to Paris, she is arrested at Leonardo Da Vinci Airport and is detained for 9 hours. By the time she is released there is a mob of journalists and paparazzi waiting for her to show up. Gossip tabloids carry tales of Sophia being caught with millions of lire in cash in her handbag and with letters of credit from Italian banks hidden within clothing in her suitcase. Sophia, very upset, says, "I don't want to stay in this country one more day." This is the beginning of Sophia's second exile from Italy.

Confiscation - March
Art collection valued at $3.8 million - including canvases of Canaletto, Reubens, De Chirico, Braque and Picasso - is seized by Roman customs officials.


Apartment in Fire - April 19
While Carlo Ponti happens to be away in Switzerland, fire breaks out in their Paris building on Avenue George V in the middle of the night. Awakened by smoke that broke out from a fire in the lower apartment of Jaccques Dorfman, a French producer, Sophia grabs her two sons and runs to the roof of the building where they stay for two hours. Sophia suffers smoke intoxication but the fire does not reach the 7th floor where her apartment is located.


Lew Grade Party - June 23
Sophia flies to London where she attends a party given by Lew Grade, the producer of Cassandra Crossing and Firepower.

Biography Book
A press release announces that A.E. Hotchner will write a biography on Sophia to be published in 1979.

Una giornata Dubbing- October 29
Sophia arrives in New York in order to do the dubbing of her most recent film, Una giornata particolare.
