Maria Callas
Movie project on the life of Greek opera singer Maria Callas, starring Sophia under the direction of Ken Russell and produced by Roger Gimble, is to start in July with locations in Venice, Milan and Rome. The project, announced in October 1982, which was to include Alessandra Mussolini as young Callas, aborts before starting.

Anna Karenina
The death of director George Cukor in January terminates another project Ponti had been discussing for a few years.

European press reports that Sophia is an Arab adopted from a Muslim family.

Summer at California Ranch - June
The whole Ponti family is back at the Concordia ranch in California. Edoardo takes a special program at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute, which is run by Sophia's friend Anna Strasberg who took over after her husband's death in 1982.

Alessandra Poses for Playboy - July
Sophia's niece, Alessandra, is featured on the cover of Italian Playboy magazine.

Plastic Surgery - September

Rumors are circulating that Sophia underwent some breast reconstruction at the nimble hands of Dr. Rodolphe Troques,
a Ponti's intimate friend and plastic surgeon in Paris.

Columbus Day Parade - October 9
Sophia is invited to be grand marshal of the annual Columbus Day Parade in New York City but the event is canceled because of the death of Terence Cardinal Cooke, cardinal of the Roman Catholic diocese of New York, on October 6.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia - October
As Sophia is promoting her perfume in Philadelphia she visits the Children's Hospital where liver transplants are performed. Sophia had read about it in European newspapers and wanted to see the "wonderful things they do".

Christmas Holidays in California - December

Sophia spends Christmas and New Year's holidays at her California ranch and flies back to her other home in Geneva, via London, on January 8, 1984.

Antonella Murgia and Carlo Ponti

Gossips newspapers report that Ponti's long-time liaison with Dalida Di Lazzaro, which had gone on for 9 years, reportedly ends unhappily for Ponti. A German magazine runs at the same time of photograph of him out in public with 25-year old Antonella Murgia, who earlier had a part in
Fatto di sangue (1978) and The Squeeze (1978), with Ponti as executive producer. The German magazine describes Murgia as the 73-year-old Ponti's special cure for the sexual weaknesses that come with old age and is qualifying Ponti as "tender, sensual, and very generous".
