CHRONICLES
1985

"At age 50, Sophia Loren continues to be one of the world's most acclaimed beauties. No lines etch a complexion as polished as fine marble.
No gray streaks the russet hair that falls in soft waves to her shoulders."
– Mary Martin Niepold, Philadelphia Inquirer.

EDITOR'S NOTES

Playmen Magazine's Nudes - January 6
Sophia loses her case against Italy's Playmen magazine which published early never-published nudes of her in December 1984. Roman judge Domenico Bonaccorsi rules that the publication of the pictures didn't damage Sophia's reputation as a wife and mother, because they were "neither vulgar nor dishonorable. He considers the pictures "rather chaste", with a "candid ingenuousness".

Sophia Donates Books to Hometown Pozzuoli - January
Italian newspaper Il Mattino announces that Sophia will donate $50,000 worth of books to the town of Pozzuoli in order to help establish a modern library in the Naples area which was hit by an earthquake in October 1983.

Pictures Returned to Sender - June
Poste Vaticane, Vatican's postal serices returns 20 early 1950's movie stills featuring Sophia deemed to daring at the time. The Vatican used Article 36 of the International Convention which leaves it up to each postal administration to decide what is obscene.
