- March 29

Sophia attends the Academy Awards with her two sons and presents an Honorary Oscar to Federico Fellini in recognition of his cinematic accomplishments that "have thrilled and entertained worldwide audiences". Sophia asks Fellini if she can kiss him.

El Cid Revival - August 5
Sophia and her son Edoardo, sitting next to Charlton Heston, attend a special screening of Martin Scorsese's restored version of 1961 film  El Cid at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York City. Sophia confesses she sees the entire movie for the first time.

US Open - September 3
Accompanied by her niece Alessandra Mussolini, Sophia watches under the broiling stadium court sun tennis matches at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, NY. Sophia is Jim Courier's guest and they meet in the USTA office after his victory over Michael Joyce in the second round. As she leaves Sophia kisses him on both cheeks.

United Nations Dinner Benefit - September 10
California Women of Bosnia gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

From Valentino to Armani - October 6
Accompanied by her governess, Ruth Bapst, Sophia shows up at a Giorgio Armani fashion show in Milan, dressed in a long skirt with a black jacket and a white jabot, designed by Armani himself. The event marks the official switch from Valentino to Armani and is referred to as Sophia's betrayal in the world of fashion. Valentino's comments are "She is a dear friend, she may dress as she pleases."


Vina del Mar, Chile - October
Sophia is at the Chilean Film Festival in Vina del Mar.

Shanghai International Film Festival - October 12
Sophia is in Shanghai for the first edition of Film Festival where her film La Ciociara is presented in China for the first time in history. Quick visit to Beijing.

Sophia denies a rumor based on German magazine article claiming her intentions to get involved in Italian politics, namely as mayor of Naples.

California in Flame - October 27
Sophia is forced to abandon her ranch in Thousand Oaks as a fierce and fast-moving wall of fire roars down from the Santa Monica Mountains to the Pacific coast. Fortunatley the Hidden Valley region remains untouched.


Goodbye to Federico Fellini - October 31
Fellini and Sophia never worked together - with the exception of Luci del varietà in which Sophia is an extra - but Sophia's comments after he passes away are "A great light just went out and we are now in the dark. The world, without his imagination, will be much sadder."


Ponti Undergoes Surgery - November 5
Carlo Ponti has angioplasty surgery in order to unblock his blood vessels and then undergoes open-heart operation four days later in Los Angeles.

Sophia Upset at Niece Alessandra -
Sophia is very upset at her niece Alessandra for having used a picture with both of them on it to promote her campaign.
