PLOT

Fernando, Baldassarre’s son, takes a fancy to Leonora. He is unaware, however, that she is the favorite of the king of Castile, Alfonso XI. Meanwhile the king is planning to disown the queen, who is Baldassarre’s daughter and therefore Fernando’s sister. When he returns from war against the Arabs, the valiant Fernando is invited by the king to ask for any reward he wants in return for the services he has performed. But King Alfonso learns that Fernando loves, and is loved by, Leonora, so he decides to take revenge by giving her to Fernando in marriage. Once the wedding has been celebrated, the sad truth is revealed to Fernando. He then disowns his wife, gives back all of the honors bestowed upon him, and seeks refuge in the monastery of San Giacomo. Leonora, dying, joins him there and obtains his forgiveness. (Enrico Lancia)

Story from the opera of the same name by Gaetano Donizetti based on the libretto of Alfonso Royer and Gustavo Vaez.
