In this "petticoat-and-peasant-blouse" picture, Sophia spends most of the time not in an actual peasant blouse but in a more revealing corset cover. She works the petticoats to great visual advantage with a flurry of activities that keep them flying. Sophia's floppy straw hat is meant to show how rustic a peasant she is... Blithe and appealing in her picture hat of summer straw, she is as enchanting as a shepherdess from a seventeenth-century pastoral scene.
